Competing web hosting companies HostGator.com and Go Daddy will go bumper-to-bumper this Friday at Chicagoland Speedway for the NASCAR Nationwide Series Dollar General 300. Joe Nemechek will race the No. 87 HostGator.com Chevrolet, competing against the No. 7 Go Daddy car driven by Danica Patrick.

So to that end I can assure you readers, no web hosting provider can truly promise a 100% uptime 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 356 days a year. However some web host come pretty darn close to offer such an outstanding service. Take for example Bluehost- I have been monitoring Uptime Statistics of Bluehost for almost two years. In the year 2008 blue host uptime statistics where at 99.579%.

On of the reasons I have started to monitor Bluehost uptime was that I myself host few websites with this web hosting provider. I also wanted to test a service that allows me to monitor web hosts and my own websites- ServiceUptime.

So today I would like to announce that I will try to implement uptime monitoring for every web hosting provider featured on this website by the end of 2009. SEO Super Comments
From now one the comments on this blog will be displayed using SEO Super Comments plugin for WordPress. I have only recently discovered this little plugin, but I am already in love with it and would recommend it to any blogger that uses self hosted version of WordPress (from WrodPress.org). One of the big differences you will notice with this plugin is that comment author link does not link straight to your website but to a page on this blogs from which there is a link to your website. Of course the links in the comments will continue to remain “dofollow”.

Live Chat Widget
Another new feature of this blog is the Live Chat widget which you can see on the top of the sidebar. This chat widget is powered by ProvideSupport.com. I highly recommend this feature to any one who uses their websites to promote their products or services. As you may know, the Web Hosting Review Blog is powered by WordPress. And while there are tens of thousands of different themes available, it is not always easy to find a theme that would both be pleasing to the eye while offer an outstanding performance.

I have decided to install the theme called Staypressed, to power this blog from now on. One of the characteristics I look in a theme is the simplicity of CSS files that would allow me to modify the look and feel of my blog without being afraid of messing things up. The Staypressed theme for WordPress is extremely easy to work with. It also should be mentioned that the theme does use many background images and is very fast and responsive to visitors that may not have fast internet connections.

If you are looking for a new WordPress theme, I recommend to take a closer look at Staypressed. Until the most recent crisis with my own web hosting provider, I took for granted the fact that I could have gone with services just like the one offered by Matt, and could have completely avoid the dreadful downtime.

Nothing can be worse to a web-master than having his websites shutdown. If you register your domains interdependently of your web hosting provider, there is a good chance you will have more freedom to reroute the traffic through DNS to a more appealing page than just the one provided by your web host which generally reads “such and such website was suspended, the web-master should contact the web hosting provider immediately”.

• Rewriting URLs (aka Mode Rewrite)- is probably one of the most common uses of .htaccess file. Some blogging platforms and Content Management Systems by default produce URLs that may contain parameters in them, which are commonly referred as “ugly urls”. Implementing the mode-rewrite should not be attempted if you are not comfortable modifying the .htaccess. Platforms like WordPress or Joomle (as well as many others) provide either a reconfigured .htaccess file or allow modifying that file through the platforms interface.
• Customization of the error responses. You can also use .htaccess to to customize which page should be shown to a visitor if a server side error occurs. For example you can tell your server to show a specific page if 404 Not Found error occurs by creating a custom “Not Found” page which can resemble the look and feel of the rest of your website and placing the following line into your .htaccess file:
  ErrorDocument 404 /Not-Found.html
  The above command will only work if the custom error page is placed in the root directory of your website (example: http://www.yourwebsite.com/Not-Found.html )
• Redirects- another common use of .htaccess file is to implemen redirects. You can find more about 301 redirects, including non-Apache and Non-Linux servers here. One of the common redirects used by many web masters consist of following code in the .htaccess file:

  redirect /file.html http://www.somesite.com/
  The above command instructs to redirect a user to a specified URL.

• Authorization and authentication. The .htaccess cna be often use to restrict the access to certain directories on your server. This is accomplished with an aid of .htpasswd file which is used to store valid user names and passwords needed to access a Basic Things You Should Know About .htaccessdirectory.
• Cache (Cash ) control- allows you control user agent caching used by web browsers, which can reduce bandwidth usage and server load.

While .htaccess offers incredible flexibility in configuring your websites, it is also should be noted that use of this file can result in performance loss and may cause some security issues if not configured properly.

Installing Your WordPress Manually (Least Recommended)

I am not going to spend much time on this one, since the good folks at WordPress have created am outstanding manual which you can use if you desire to install your WordPress manually. If you host does not offer an installation script (such as Fantastico), you may have no other choice. Otherwise I would recommend using Fantastico for such purpose, or SimpleScripts.

Installing WordPress Using Fantastico.

If your web hosting providers offers you to manage your account cPanel chances are it has Fantastico – just look for a blue smiley face in once logged into your cPanel (just as shown in the image to the right). After clicking on it follow the steps below:

1. From Fantastico naviagtion menu click on “WordPress” to be taken to page with the quick references about WordPress installations on your website. There might not be much information if you have never installed WordPress on your website:



2. Next click New Installation to be taken to the next step:



3. In this step you will be asked to provide information needed to install your WordPress. For the purpose of illustration we’ll install WordPress on our website www.web-howtingreview.com, placing it in a directory called “wordpress”, therefore our new WordPress can be accessed by using following URL – http://www.web-hostingreview.com/wordpress/ . You may however chose to install the WordPress at the top level of your domain (in this case just leave the “Install In Directory” empty. Below the snapshot are short explanation of each piece of info you will enter and how it is used to power your WordPress:



4. After clicking the “Install WordPress” button you will be brought to a review page:

   
   At this point nothing was installed, you need to click “Finish Installation” to complete your WordPress installation.

5. After you click “Finish Installation” button, you will be taken to a confirmation page where you can specify an email address to which the details of your new installation will be sent. It is a good idea to have that information handy in the future since it includes the user name, password and details about newly created MySQL database.

Installing WordPress via Fantastico should not take more than 5 minutes – but it if course can vary depending on your internet connection.

Installing WordPress Using SimpleScripts

If your web hosting provider allows you may want to choose to install using SimpleScripts. You can also locate simple SimpleScripts in your cPanel. For the full list of participating web hosts visit SimpleScripts‘ sign up page. Some of the participating web hosts have chose to pay for their clients for the use of SimpleScripts, but you need to login into SimpleScripts from your cPanel.

The tutorial bellow was compiled while installing the WordPress with Bluehost, but the process should be similar (if not identical) with any web host.

1. Once logged into your SimpleScripts click on WordPress installation icon, to be taken to WordPress installation overview:



2. Click “Install Now” to be take to a page where you will provide some essential information for your new installation:



3. Provide information need it for your installation. Here you can choose the version of WordPress (latest is always recommended), the directory on your website, etc. :






4. Click “Complete” button- you will be taken to a confirmation page as shown below:

That’s it, you have just installed WordPress on your Bluehost account using SimpleScripts.

This tutorial should be used at your own risk and discretion.

The simple answer to this question is that Yahoo! simply does not allow to do that. Here is how they explain it in their help section:

…htaccess refers to the main configuration file for Apache, a popular open-source HTTP server. The .htaccess file can be used to create custom error pages and web page redirects, set up password protection, enable SSI, and more. Yahoo! does not currently allow you to upload .htaccess files to your account. For other customization options, we recommend the Custom Error Pages and password-protection features available in your Web Hosting Control Panel.

Whether you like it or not there is not much you can do about it, besides hoping that Yahoo! will eventually change this part of their policy and begins to allow access to .htaccess files.

This of course can pose certain problems if you need advance control to implement re-write rules or enable certain redirects.

With your favorite text editor (such as Notepad) create a new document then copy and paste following line of code into the document you have just created:

If your web host offers PHP your browser should open a page that will tell you the version of PHP as well as some configuration info.

The update to “About” page was long over due, in the light of the fact that this blog is now three years old. The About page is not also includes disclosures as well as comments and privacy policies.

1. Security Fixes. Generally WordPress updates patches the wholes as far a security of your website is concerned. If you don’t want to do it for yourself, you should consider your regular readers and visitors.
2. General Improvements. Since powering this blog by WordPress almost with every major upgrade, there was an improvement in WordPress functionatily.
3. WordPress 2.5.1 makes it easy to upgrade your plugins. So much so that you can perform them with just a single click without need of downloading and uploading the newest versions of plugins you use on your blog.



4. Media Files. WordPress 2.5.1 hd improved dramatically how you upload and manage your media files: pictures, video files and audio files.



5. WordPress 2.5.1 had dramatically improve the “behavior” of WYSIWYG editor, in a way that it is not screwing up your code ans it did in previous versions. For example if you needed to embed a video from YouTube, you had to turn the WYSIWYG editor off in your profile setting while working on the post containing the video. Now you it is enough to just switch to HTML editor right in post editing window.

While all these improvements are great, there are still plenty of challenges users of WordPress are faced with. Particularly if you have never upgraded your WordPress before or need to do it by uploading your own files via FTP protocol. While many web hosting providers offer Fatastico script to install and upgrade your word press, the only how that is keeping up with providing the latest upgrade via Fantastico is Lunarpages. Other web hosts seam to be a little behind on keeping up with the latest versions of scripts available through Fantastico. Of course few hosts, Bluehost, Hostmonster and Fastdomain, have implemented SimpleScripts, allowing users to upgrade to the newest version of WordPress within hours of the release of upgrades.

New Rating System

In order to provide visitors to this blog with a more effective way to leave their feedback about web hosting providers, Review Plugin was installed and hacked in such a way that it will allow to rate any of the web hosting providers listed in the side bar. I always have been always strong proponent of No-Nofollow movement among bloggers. For a long time I had a plugin on my blog that removed “nofollow” attributes from links in the comments but lately I became some what antisocial, as far as this blog is concerned. The amount of spam this blog is receiving lately is mind boggling. I felt that I had no choice but to re-introduce “nofollow” to my blog.

I will however continue to reward readers of this blog, in particular those who leave feedback about their web hosting provider. I will link back to their blogs or websites once a week on my “end of the week thank you posts”. I reserve the freedom to choose the anchor text and the page on your website should I decide to reward you with a deep link. I do however have only one request- please use your first name.

Trying to game this blog with rich anchor text will only hurt your chances, from now on I will mar such comments as spam.
