Spam is probably one of the most frustrating sides of running a blog or website. In the past I have used several different anti spam plugins with Spam Karma 2 being one of the best out there, and I hope there will be a major update to it some day. Most recently I have switched to Akismet, however there is one huge issue as far as this blog goes. While Akisment is rather good in detecting automated spam (comments left by bots), it keeps those comments in your database for about 15 days as well as the “other data” associated with the comments. For example, when user leaves the comments while reviewing a web hosting provider, he or she assigns specific ratings. Bots however completely ignore the rating questions which affects the ratings shown on the profiles of web hosts featured on this website. This of course is resolved by deleting the spam comments without waiting for Akismet to do it. However it puts some strain on the resources on the days when you need to delete thousand or more automated spam at once.

So today I would like to give a test run to a new anti-spam plugin for WordPress called WP-SpamFree. I have read a few good things about the plugin and only minuted ago have installed it on this blog.

Comment Policy Has Changed

Since the very inception of Web Hosting Review Blog, I have maintained that the link to the comment author should not have “nofollow” attribute. It was my way I could thank those who took their time writing a comment or reviewing a web hosting provider. Unfortunately this approach can backfire. Not only it is an open invitation to “spambots” but to human generated spam due to the fact that this blog is listed in the number of “no-nofollow blogs” directories. In recent weeks the number of comments that were aimed at ~~exploring~~ abusing possible SEO benefits has more than quadrupled. While I was tempted to oust and ridicule a few as an example, I will just say this. You know who you are, so please behave from now on.

In the light of increased spam (150+ daily) I have decided to revert to use nofollow attribute in the comments from now on. If you are discouraged by this do not be, there is still a good chance to get a friendly link from me. If you leave a relevant comment, even if you choose to respectfully (respectfully is the key word) disagree with me, I will most certainly take time to visit your blog and website. Those who choose to review a web hosting provider (all of the web hosting provider’s profiles are filed in Reviews category) will be rewarded with a link in the upcoming “thank you posts”- I reserve to use the anchor text of my choosing in those posts. These future “thank you posts” is the way to remedy the presence of “nofollow” attribute in the comments.

When looking for web hosting providers, users often ask question about how reliable a particular web host is? There is absolutely nothing strange in such a question. For many, the ability to have a website up and running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week may be crucial element for running a successful business. But even companies like Google or Yahoo! have issues with their servers and connection.

So to that end I can assure you readers, no web hosting provider can truly promise a 100% uptime 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 356 days a year. However some web host come pretty darn close to offer such an outstanding service. Take for example Bluehost- I have been monitoring Uptime Statistics of Bluehost for almost two years. In the year 2008 blue host uptime statistics where at 99.579%.

On of the reasons I have started to monitor Bluehost uptime was that I myself host few websites with this web hosting provider. I also wanted to test a service that allows me to monitor web hosts and my own websites- ServiceUptime.

So today I would like to announce that I will try to implement uptime monitoring for every web hosting provider featured on this website by the end of 2009. While it may enhance this website, the uptime statistics however should not be the deciding factor before purchasing web hosting plan.

Least few days I was working on revamping Web Hosting Review blog. In my previous post I gave props to Staypressed theme for WordPress. Today I would like to highlight tow other features recently introduced on this blog: the new comments management system and the live chat widget.

SEO Super Comments
From now one the comments on this blog will be displayed using SEO Super Comments plugin for WordPress. I have only recently discovered this little plugin, but I am already in love with it and would recommend it to any blogger that uses self hosted version of WordPress (from WrodPress.org). One of the big differences you will notice with this plugin is that comment author link does not link straight to your website but to a page on this blogs from which there is a link to your website. Of course the links in the comments will continue to remain “dofollow”.

Live Chat Widget
Another new feature of this blog is the Live Chat widget which you can see on the top of the sidebar. This chat widget is powered by ProvideSupport.com. I highly recommend this feature to any one who uses their websites to promote their products or services. ProvideSupport.com offers a 7 day free trial at the end of which you can decide on whether or not to continue with the service. Things have been rather quiet on this blog since May. In the course of last few days a new design was implemented on Web Hosting Review Blog. Hopefully this new design will simplify navigation on the blog and overall improves the visitor’s experience.

As you may know, the Web Hosting Review Blog is powered by WordPress. And while there are tens of thousands of different themes available, it is not always easy to find a theme that would both be pleasing to the eye while offer an outstanding performance.

I have decided to install the theme called Staypressed, to power this blog from now on. One of the characteristics I look in a theme is the simplicity of CSS files that would allow me to modify the look and feel of my blog without being afraid of messing things up. The Staypressed theme for WordPress is extremely easy to work with. It also should be mentioned that the theme does use many background images and is very fast and responsive to visitors that may not have fast internet connections.

If you are looking for a new WordPress theme, I recommend to take a closer look at Staypressed. It can be downloaded from WordPress.org, directly from the Staypressed theme home page or you can also install it srtaight from your WordPress dashboard, just search for new themes using keyword “Staypressed”.

Until the most recent crisis with my own web hosting provider, I took for granted the fact that I could have gone with services just like the one offered by Matt, and could have completely avoid the dreadful downtime.

Nothing can be worse to a web-master than having his websites shutdown. If you register your domains interdependently of your web hosting provider, there is a good chance you will have more freedom to reroute the traffic through DNS to a more appealing page than just the one provided by your web host which generally reads “such and such website was suspended, the web-master should contact the web hosting provider immediately”.

Basic Things You Should Know About .htaccess

Many web hosting providers, offer access to a file called .htaccess – hypertext access. This “dot” file (the name begins with a “.”) when placed in a particular directory provides the ability for customization of the configuration of certain requests to that particular directory and it’s subdirectories. Following are the most common uses of the .htaccess file:

Rewriting URLs (aka Mode Rewrite)- is probably one of the most common uses of .htaccess file. Some blogging platforms and Content Management Systems by default produce URLs that may contain parameters in them, which are commonly referred as “ugly urls”. Implementing the mode-rewrite should not be attempted if you are not comfortable modifying the .htaccess. Platforms like WordPress or Joomle (as well as many others) provide either a reconfigured .htaccess file or allow modifying that file through the platforms interface.
Customization of the error responses. You can also use .htaccess to to customize which page should be shown to a visitor if a server side error occurs. For example you can tell your server to show a specific page if 404 Not Found error occurs by creating a custom “Not Found” page which can resemble the look and feel of the rest of your website and placing the following line into your .htaccess file:
ErrorDocument 404 /Not-Found.html
The above command will only work if the custom error page is placed in the root directory of your website (example: http://www.yourwebsite.com/Not-Found.html )
Redirects- another common use of .htaccess file is to implemen redirects. You can find more about 301 redirects, including non-Apache and Non-Linux servers here. One of the common redirects used by many web masters consist of following code in the .htaccess file:
redirect /file.html http://www.somesite.com/
The above command instructs to redirect a user to a specified URL.
Authorization and authentication. The .htaccess cna be often use to restrict the access to certain directories on your server. This is accomplished with an aid of .htpasswd file which is used to store valid user names and passwords needed to access a Basic Things You Should Know About .htaccessdirectory.
Cache (Cash ) control- allows you control user agent caching used by web browsers, which can reduce bandwidth usage and server load.

While .htaccess offers incredible flexibility in configuring your websites, it is also should be noted that use of this file can result in performance loss and may cause some security issues if not configured properly.

While some of my friends think that WordPress sucks, I am a huge fan of the blogging platform. I would recommend WordPress to any one for any purpose. So whenever I get an e-mail asking me to recommend something else “as compared” to WordPress, I feel like exploding. So hopefully after this post no one will ask me to compare anything to WordPress (yeah right!). Yes I am a bias. But hopefully readers and visitors to this blog are not as bias as I am….

The other day I have received and e-mail in which I was asked to help making a choice between WordPress and TypePad. I did not answer the e-mail. Instead I decided to ask readers and visitors to help me out.

Please tell me why do you recommend either of the blogging platforms.

Currently there are three ways you can install WordPress on BlueHost: you can install it manually, using Fantastico or SimpleScripts. Manual and Fantasctico installation can probably be used on 99% of web hosts today. SimpleScripts on the other hand is Bluehost’s “invention” and only handful of web hosting providers are offering SimpleScripts to their clients.

Installing Your WordPress Manually (Least Recommended)

I am not going to spend much time on this one, since the good folks at WordPress have created am outstanding manual which you can use if you desire to install your WordPress manually. If you host does not offer an installation script (such as Fantastico), you may have no other choice. Otherwise I would recommend using Fantastico for such purpose, or SimpleScripts.

Installing WordPress Using Fantastico.

If your web hosting providers offers you to manage your account cPanel chances are it has Fantastico – just look for a blue smiley face in once logged into your cPanel (just as shown in the image to the right). After clicking on it follow the steps below:

From Fantastico naviagtion menu click on “WordPress” to be taken to page with the quick references about WordPress installations on your website. There might not be much information if you have never installed WordPress on your website:

Next click New Installation to be taken to the next step:

In this step you will be asked to provide information needed to install your WordPress. For the purpose of illustration we’ll install WordPress on our website www.web-howtingreview.com, placing it in a directory called “wordpress”, therefore our new WordPress can be accessed by using following URL – http://www.web-hostingreview.com/wordpress/ . You may however chose to install the WordPress at the top level of your domain (in this case just leave the “Install In Directory” empty. Below the snapshot are short explanation of each piece of info you will enter and how it is used to power your WordPress:

After clicking the “Install WordPress” button you will be brought to a review page:

At this point nothing was installed, you need to click “Finish Installation” to complete your WordPress installation.
After you click “Finish Installation” button, you will be taken to a confirmation page where you can specify an email address to which the details of your new installation will be sent. It is a good idea to have that information handy in the future since it includes the user name, password and details about newly created MySQL database.

Installing WordPress via Fantastico should not take more than 5 minutes – but it if course can vary depending on your internet connection.

Installing WordPress Using SimpleScripts

If your web hosting provider allows you may want to choose to install using SimpleScripts. You can also locate simple SimpleScripts in your cPanel. For the full list of participating web hosts visit SimpleScripts‘ sign up page. Some of the participating web hosts have chose to pay for their clients for the use of SimpleScripts, but you need to login into SimpleScripts from your cPanel.

The tutorial bellow was compiled while installing the WordPress with Bluehost, but the process should be similar (if not identical) with any web host.

Once logged into your SimpleScripts click on WordPress installation icon, to be taken to WordPress installation overview:

Click “Install Now” to be take to a page where you will provide some essential information for your new installation:

Provide information need it for your installation. Here you can choose the version of WordPress (latest is always recommended), the directory on your website, etc. :

Click “Complete” button- you will be taken to a confirmation page as shown below:

That’s it, you have just installed WordPress on your Bluehost account using SimpleScripts.

This tutorial should be used at your own risk and discretion.

On an average we receive three e-mails every week from our visitors asking why can’t they upload .htaccess file to their websites on Yahoo! Small Business Web Hosting?

The simple answer to this question is that Yahoo! simply does not allow to do that. Here is how they explain it in their help section:

…htaccess refers to the main configuration file for Apache, a popular open-source HTTP server. The .htaccess file can be used to create custom error pages and web page redirects, set up password protection, enable SSI, and more. Yahoo! does not currently allow you to upload .htaccess files to your account. For other customization options, we recommend the Custom Error Pages and password-protection features available in your Web Hosting Control Panel.

Whether you like it or not there is not much you can do about it, besides hoping that Yahoo! will eventually change this part of their policy and begins to allow access to .htaccess files.

This of course can pose certain problems if you need advance control to implement re-write rules or enable certain redirects.
