I like HostGator as an overall host. If you are just getting started or have multiple sites that dont generate a lot of traffic, I would choose HostGator.

I have had speed related issues on their servers. It seems that there are problems with pulling data from a database or something. At times we see sluggish problems with one of our current sites.

No doubt someone can always have a bad experience with any hosting service, but personally, my experience with HostGator has been excellent.

The prices are very good, I have never had any issues with downtime or shared-server exploits, and my experience with customer service has been fantastic.

I am not affiliated with HostGator in any way, but have been very happy with their service and prices, and recommended them to numerous clients without any compensation.

It is true that the agents don’t always know the answer to my problems, but in general (even using the online chat customer service), all of them have been honest about what they don’t know, and taken extra steps on my behalf to find someone who has the answer.

And yes, I have certainly waited on the phone line for up to 10 minutes for an agent, but frankly, the wait has usually been worthwhile. I would rather wait and get decent service than get an outsourced agent across the world who barely speaks English and is strictly following a script.

That is my personal experience with this hosting company, and I’ve taken the time to write this simply because I have been a satisfied customer.

I was with HostGator for several years. They have very good hosting packages for the price, but their customer service is horrible.

Granted, there are a few service reps who are very knowledgeable and helpful, but of the 50+ times I contacted them over the years, I probably sat on hold waiting to speak with someone on average 10 minutes and most of the time, after holding for 10 minutes, I was told to submit a support ticket because the rep didn’t know what I was talking about!

I would recommend HostGator to new webmasters, but those of us who have been around a while and have certain needs, I I highly discourage it!

Support is one of the most important factors with any host and HG support has MUCH to be improved.

I’ve has a LiquidWeb dedicated server for several months now and WOW what an improvement!!! Support that actually answers the phone within a minute of dialing and people who actually seem to CARE about your issues and KNOW what to do!

    🙂

I have had nothing but problems with hostgator.First they would not send me the name servers because of a one cents invoice. They make it somewhat difficult to find links to pay invoices.Next thing they basically are not competent to transfer my site from old hosting. If they don’t have the ability to make transfers, they should not advertise on their home page that they can and will transfer your site.My site is still down thanks to the incompetence of whoever does the site transfers

Hostgator is definitely in the top tier of shared hosts. I list them as well.

I have used Hostgator for more than a year, and their level of service (including ticket support) is quite exceptional. I cannot remember ever having to deal with downtime.

One improvement I would like to see though is including better mailing list software.

I personally use Host Gator and have been very pleased with the service, and I have refered a friend or two. Good price, great options and features.
